Stumped by simplicity
Today ,I was reading M.Gorky's mother and to say the least i can not help admiring that golden breed of Russian literature which has given to the world few of the most fascinating stories, stirring accounts of human emotions and the most beautiful of the tragedies ever to this world .
And standing among the creme-de-la-creme of Pushkin ,Tolstoy,Chekov and others (i am not mentioning many mind you ) there is M.Gorky very much swathed in the red light of socialism and still sensible enough to narrate a tale of mother who has her intellectual catharsis through the sense of her motherhood .
You read the novel and you can't stop thinking about your mother for once in a while who is for all of us still the most precious thing we can think of . The writer very wisely and subtly pictures her emotional anxiety for her son's safety mixed with her sense of carrying on her son's good work against the establishment and how her motherly love binds these contrary ideas into one .The narration is so simple and still it like you can sense the facial expressions of the mother .Kudos to his portrayal !!
True Gorky ... !! no one could have put it in a better way than you . It is said that Tolstoy and Gorky opposed each other ideologically but respected each other immensely.Hey looks like i would be reading more of Russian stuff these days .
